Verse 4 of 8

The One Who Sees Is Always Near

ਖੁਸਿ ਖੁਸਿ ਲੈਦਾ ਵਸਤੁ ਪਰਾਈ ॥
khus khus laidaa vasat paraa-ee.
You happily, cheerfully steal the possessions of others,
ਵੇਖੈ ਸੁਣੇ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਖੁਦਾਈ ॥
vaykhai sunay tayrai naal khudaa-ee.
but the Lord God is with you, watching and listening.
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਲਬਿ ਪਇਆ ਖਾਤ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਅਗਲੀ ਗਲ ਨ ਜਾਣੀਆ ॥੪॥
dunee-aa lab pa-i-aa khaat andar aglee gal na jaanee-aa. ||4||
Through worldly greed, you have fallen into the pit; you know nothing of the future. ||4||

In plain words

It can feel easy to take what belongs to others and think no one notices,

but the One is always right there, watching and listening with love.

Chasing after more and more is like slipping into a pit. We cannot see what lies ahead.

The One is always near; honesty keeps us on solid ground.
The deeper layer

Khus khus laidaa vasat paraa-ee means happily taking what belongs to someone else. It can seem like nobody notices. Yet vaykhai sunay tayrai naal khudaa-ee: the One is right there with you, seeing and hearing. Khudaa-ee is a Persian word for God.

The pit in the last line is greed. Wanting more and more is like walking while staring at your phone. You do not see the hole in front of you, or what lies ahead.

The point is not fear of getting caught. It is the steady comfort that we are never alone. The One is always near, and honesty keeps our feet on solid ground.

A Question to Sit With

When is it hard to be honest, and what helps you choose it?
