Verse 5 of 8

Forgetting the Source Leaves Us Lost

ਜਮਿ ਜਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਮਰੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ॥
jam jam marai marai fir jammai.
You shall be born and born again, and die and die again, only to be reincarnated again.
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਜਾਇ ਪਇਆ ਦੇਸਿ ਲੰਮੈ ॥
bahut sajaa-ay pa-i-aa days lammai.
You shall suffer terrible punishment, on your way to the land beyond.
ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤਾ ਤਿਸੈ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ਅੰਧਾ ਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਹੈ ਪਰਾਣੀਆ ॥੫॥
jin keetaa tisai na jaanee anDhaa taa dukh sahai paraanee-aa. ||5||
The mortal does not know the One who created him; he is blind, and so he shall suffer. ||5||

In plain words

When we forget where we came from, we wander in circles, around and around again.

The long road onward feels hard and heavy.

Not knowing the One who made us, the heart walks in the dark, and it hurts.

Forgetting the Source leaves us lost; remembering lights the way.
The deeper layer

Life can go around and around. Jam jam marai marai fir jammai means being born, dying and being born again. Many Indian traditions picture life as a big circle like that, with a long, hard road beyond.

The key is the last line. Jin keetaa tisai na jaanee: a person does not know the One who made them. Forgetting where we come from is like losing the map on a hike. We walk in circles and feel lost in the dark.

Remembering the Source is like finding the map again. The way lights up. So the verse is not meant to scare us. It is an invitation to remember.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you remember what matters when you feel lost?
