Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 81
Verse 6 of 8

The Restlessness of a Forgetful Heart

ਖਾਲਕ ਥਾਵਹੁ ਭੁਲਾ ਮੁਠਾ ॥
khaalak thaavhu bhulaa muthaa.
Forgetting the Creator Lord, he is ruined.
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਖੇਲੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਰੁਠ ਤੁਠਾ ॥
dunee-aa khayl buraa ruth tuthaa.
The drama of the world is bad; it brings sadness and then happiness.
ਸਿਦਕੁ ਸਬੂਰੀ ਸੰਤੁ ਨ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਵਤੈ ਆਪਣ ਭਾਣੀਆ ॥੬॥
sidak sabooree sant na mili-o vatai aapan bhaanee-aa. ||6||
One who does not meet the Saint does not have faith or contentment; he wanders just as he pleases. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A forgetful heart grows restless. The world feels like a play of ups and downs, sad one moment, glad the next.

Without meeting the holy people, the heart has no faith and no contentment, and it drifts wherever the mood pulls.

The Guru's people steady a heart tossed by every mood.
The deeper layer

Khaalak thaavhu bhulaa muthaa means that forgetting the Creator leaves a person robbed. Then the world feels like a show of ups and downs. Dunee-aa khayl buraa ruth tuthaa: sad one minute, happy the next.

That is an honest picture of our moods. They swing back and forth like a playground swing.

The verse points to what steadies us: meeting the sant, the Guru's people. Without them, a heart has no sidak (faith) and no saboree (contentment). It drifts wherever its mood pulls. Among the Guru's people, the heart finally rests.

A Question to Sit With

Who helps you feel steady when your feelings swing?
