The Great Play in Which We All Dance

ਮਉਲਾ ਖੇਲ ਕਰੇ ਸਭਿ ਆਪੇ ॥ ਇਕਿ ਕਢੇ ਇਕਿ ਲਹਰਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ॥
ma-ulaa khayl karay sabh aapay. ik kadhay ik lahar vi-aapay.
The Lord Himself stages all this drama. Some, he lifts up, and some he throws into the waves.
ਜਿਉ ਨਚਾਏ ਤਿਉ ਤਿਉ ਨਚਨਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਿਰਤ ਵਿਹਾਣੀਆ ॥੭॥
ji-o nachaa-ay ti-o ti-o nachan sir sir kirat vihaanee-aa. ||7||
As He makes them dance, so do they dance. Everyone lives their lives according to their past actions. ||7||

In plain words

The whole world is like a great play that the One sets in motion,

lifting some like a wave rising, letting some dip low.

As the One moves the music, so we all dance, each life unfolding in its own way.

Life's ups and downs are steps in one great dance.
The deeper layer

Ma-ulaa khayl karay sabh aapay means the Master stages the whole play. Ma-ulaa is an Arabic word for Lord, and khayl means play.

Life is like one great dance, and the One sets the music. Some are lifted up like a rising wave. Some dip low for a while. Ji-o nachaa-ay ti-o ti-o nachan: as the One makes us dance, so we dance. Each life moves along with its own past actions.

So the ups and downs are not random cruelty. They are steps in one big dance. Seeing life this way helps us not take every rise and every dip so personally.

A Question to Sit With

Can you hold both the highs and lows of a day a little more lightly?
