Grace Turns the Whole Song to Peace

ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ॥
mihar karay taa khasam Dhi-aa-ee.
When the Lord and Master grants His Grace, then we meditate on Him.

In the Society of the Saints, one is not consigned to hell.

Please bless Nanak with the gift of the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord; he continually sings the songs of Your Glories. ||8||2||8||12||20||

In plain words

When grace touches us, we naturally turn and remember the One.

In the Sangat, the heart is kept safe and at peace.

Nanak says: bless me, please, with the sweet gift of the Naam, so my heart keeps singing Your praises.

Grace turns the whole song of a life toward peace.
The deeper layer

Everything ends in hope. Mihar karay taa khasam Dhi-aa-ee means when the Master is kind, we remember Him. Mihar means grace, a gift of kindness.

Santaa sangat narak na paa-ee: in the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — no one falls into hell. They are kept safe and at peace, like a child walking home with friends instead of alone.

Then Guru Arjan asks for one gift: amrit naam, the Name that is sweet like nectar. With it, he keeps singing the One's praises every day. The song ends like a thank-you that never wants to stop.

A Question to Sit With

What are you grateful for that feels like a gift you did not earn?
