Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 82
Verse 16 of 16

With Open Hands I Ask Only for Your Name

aap niraalam gur gam gi-aanaa.
He Himself is immaculate; by contact with the Guru, spiritual wisdom is obtained.
jo deesai tujh maahi samaanaa.
Whatever is seen, shall merge into You.
Nanak, the lowly, begs for charity at Your Door; please, bless him with the glorious greatness of Your Name. ||16||1||

In plain words

You are perfectly pure, and wisdom comes through the Guru.

Everything I can see will one day melt back into You.

Nanak says: I come to Your door with empty, open hands and ask for just one thing. Give me the Naam; that is the only greatness I want.

The one thing worth asking for is to carry the Name in my heart.
The deeper layer

Nanak calls himself lowly and stands at the door with open hands, asking for nothing he has earned. The single request is for the Naam, the treasure that outlasts everything.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for just one thing that would last, what would it be?
