Verse 9 of 16

You Are the Speaker and the One Who Listens

aapay Dhanakh aapay sarbaanaa.
He Himself is the bow, and He Himself is the archer.
aapay sugharh saroop si-aanaa.
He Himself is all-wise, beautiful and all-knowing.
kahtaa baktaa suntaa so-ee aapay banat banaa-ee hay. ||9||
He is the speaker, the orator and the listener. He Himself made what is made. ||9||

In plain words

You are the bow and the hand that draws it.

You are wise and lovely and clever beyond all telling.

You are the one who speaks, and also the one who listens, and everything that is made, You made.

The One who hears my words is also the One who helped me speak them.
The deeper layer

The speaker-and-listener image is a favorite Gurbani way of dissolving the gap between the one who prays and the one prayed to. The One is on both ends of every word.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone who listens to you? How does that feel?
