The Restless Search, and Where Peace Waits

antar agan jalai bhatkaaray.
The great fire of desire blazes within her.
manmukh takay kundaa chaaray.
The self-willed manmukh looks around in the four directions.
bin satgur sayvay ki-o sukh paa-ee-ai saachay haath vadaa-ee hay. ||2||
Without serving the True Guru, how can she find peace? Glorious greatness rests in the hands of the True Lord. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Sometimes a fire of wanting flares up inside me, and I go looking all around, in every direction, for something to cool it.

But peace was never out there to begin with.

It comes when I serve the Guru; greatness rests in the hands of the True One.

The peace I chase in every direction is found by settling in one place inside.
The deeper layer

The blazing inner fire and the looking in all four directions describe the restless, outward-searching mind. Greatness (vadaa-ee) is in the True One's hands, found by settling, with no need to chase.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you chase after that would feel better if you just paused?
