My Beloved Is Right Here in My Own Heart

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
maaroo mehlaa 1.
Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਦੂਜੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅੰਨੀ ਬੋਲੀ ॥
doojee durmat annee bolee.
In duality and evil-mindedness, the soul-bride is blind and deaf.
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਕੀ ਕਚੀ ਚੋਲੀ ॥
kaam kroDh kee kachee cholee.
She wears the dress of sexual desire and anger.
ghar var sahj na jaanai chhohar bin pir need na paa-ee hay. ||1||
Her Husband Lord is within the home of her own heart, but she does not know Him; without her Husband Lord, she cannot go to sleep. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When I get pulled into feeling cut off from everything, I can no longer see or hear clearly.

It is as if I have thrown on a rough, ill-fitting coat of wanting and anger.

And all the while, the One I long for is right here, inside my own heart; once I know that, I can finally rest.

The One I keep searching for is already at home inside my own heart.
The deeper layer

Lost in separateness, the soul-bride cannot see or hear, wrapped in a raw coat of desire and anger. Yet the Beloved was never far: the Beloved lives in the heart's own home.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you go looking for something that is already close by?
