Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 84
Verse 15 of 16

Wherever I Step, I Am in Your Shelter

rakh rakh pair Dharay pa-o Dharnaa.
Carefully, carefully, I place my feet upon the ground.
jat kat daykh-a-u tayree sarnaa.
Wherever I go, I behold Your Sanctuary.
dukh sukh deh toohai man bhaaveh tujh hee si-o ban aa-ee hay. ||15||
Whether You grant me pain or pleasure, You are pleasing to my mind. I am in harmony with You. ||15||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I walk softly and carefully through my days.

And wherever I go, I find I am already inside Your shelter.

Whether the day brings me joy or difficulty, You are dear to me; I am at peace, in step with You.

Wherever I step, I am already inside a shelter I did not build.
The deeper layer

Careful walking becomes an image of mindful living. The soul discovers it is always already sheltered, so both pleasure and pain are met in the same steady closeness with the One.

A Question to Sit With

What is a place or person that feels like shelter when your day is hard?
