Verse 16 of 16

The One Companion Who Stays to the End

ant kaal ko baylee naahee.
No one is anyone's companion or helper at the very last moment;
gurmukh jaataa tuDh saalaahee.
as Gurmukh, I realize You and praise You.
naanak naam ratay bairaagee nij ghar taarhee laa-ee hay. ||16||3||
O Nanak, imbued with the Naam, I am detached; in the home of my own self deep within, I am absorbed in the primal void of deep meditation. ||16||3||

In plain words

Of all the things I gather, most cannot come with me to the very end of the journey.

But the One I have loved and praised, that stays.

Nanak says: held in the Naam, resting quietly at home inside myself, I carry the one companion that never leaves.

The love and the Name I grow are the companions that stay to the end.
The deeper layer

At the final moment no one goes along as a companion. What stays is the Naam and the love grown through praise; the Naam is what the soul carries forward.

A Question to Sit With

What is something good you are growing now that you hope to keep for a long time?
