Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 85
Verse 7 of 16

Turning Only Inward on Myself Leaves Me Stuck

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਦਰਗਹ ਸੀਝੈ ॥
manmukh kaday na dargeh seejhai.
The manmukh never succeeds in the Court of the Lord.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਕਿਉ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਰੀਝੈ ॥
bin sabdai ki-o antar reejhai.
Without the Word of the Shabad, how can one be pleased within?
ਬਾਧੇ ਆਵਹਿ ਬਾਧੇ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
baaDhay aavahi baaDhay jaaveh sojhee boojh na kaa-ee hay. ||7||
In bondage they come, and in bondage they go; they understand and comprehend nothing. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When I follow only my own mind, I never find my place in the One's court.

Without a true word to open my heart, how could I ever feel content inside?

Bound I come and bound I go, understanding nothing at all.

Following only my own mind, I come and go bound, and nothing comes clear.
The deeper layer

The manmukh, the one who follows only their own mind, ends up tangled and unsatisfied. BaaDhay aavahi baaDhay jaaveh: bound they come, bound they go. Without the Word, the sabad, the heart finds no contentment and nothing comes clear.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that helps you feel un-stuck when you are tangled up inside?
