Verse 2 of 16

Nearer Than I Think, Never Far Away

aapay nayrhai naahee dooray.
He is near at hand, not far away.
boojheh gurmukh say jan pooray.
The Gurmukhs understand Him; perfect are those humble beings.
tin kee sangat ahinis laahaa gur sangat ayh vadaa-ee hay. ||2||
Associating with them night and day is profitable. This is the glorious greatness of associating with the Guru. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You are close, closer than I usually notice, and never far off.

Those who follow the teaching feel this, and they become whole and good.

Being in the Sangat with them, day and night, is a gift; this is the greatness of the Guru's Sangat.

The One is nearer than I usually notice.
The deeper layer

The One is near, never far (nayrhai naahee dooray). Those who sense it become whole, and their Sangat is itself a blessing (laahaa, profit).

Gur sangat is the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. There the nearness of the One is shared.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone whose closeness makes you feel calmer and more whole?
