Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 88
Verse 2 of 16

The Ages Turn as the One Pleases

ਜੁਗ ਛਤੀਹ ਤਿਨੈ ਵਰਤਾਏ ॥
jug chhateeh tinai vartaa-ay.
Thirty-six ages passed like this.
ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
ji-o tis bhaanaa tivai chalaa-ay.
He causes all to happen by the Pleasure of His Will.
ਤਿਸਹਿ ਸਰੀਕੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਕੋਈ ਆਪੇ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
tiseh sareek na deesai ko-ee aapay apar apaaraa hay. ||2||
No rival of His can be seen. He Himself is infinite and endless. ||2||

In plain words

Age after age after age went by, more than you could ever count, all unfolding just as the One meant them to.

Everything moves the way the flow of existence moves it — like a river finding its path down a mountain.

There is no one to rival the One, no second beside it. It alone is endless, boundless, without any edge.

The One that made all time has no rival and no limit.
The deeper layer

Jug chhateeh (thirty-six ages) is an image of immeasurable time. The One runs it all by its own nature (bhaanaa) — not as a ruler barking orders, but the way a river simply flows. Sareek (rival) underlines that there is only One, no competitor.

A Question to Sit With

What is the biggest, longest thing you can try to imagine?
