Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 88
Verse 11 of 16

Even as the Body Tires, the Name Stays Near

biraDh bha-i-aa tan chheejai dayhee.
The body grows old, and is beaten out of shape.
raam na jap-ee ant sanayhee.
But he does not meditate on the Lord, His only friend, even at the end.
naam visaar chalai muhi kaalai dargeh jhooth khu-aaraa hay. ||11||
Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he departs with his face blackened. The false are humiliated in the Court of the Lord. ||11||

In plain words

As the years pass, the body grows tired and bends, the way an old tree leans.

How sad to reach the very end and never once have turned to the One who was your truest friend all along.

So keep the Name close now, today — it is a friend who never leaves, right to the last breath and beyond.

The truest friend is one you can turn to at any age, at any moment.
The deeper layer

Raam na jap-ee ant sanayhee — the One is the friend who stays to the very end. That friend is here now, at any age. Turning late, or never turning at all, is a loss: a lifelong friendship left unopened.

A Question to Sit With

Who is a friend you can count on no matter what?
