Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 92
Verse 9 of 17

The Name Gives a Life Its True Worth

koorh kalar tan bhasmai dhayree.
The body of the false person is just a pile of barren dirt.
bin naavai kaisee pat tayree.
Without the Name, what honor can you have?
baaDhay mukat naahee jug chaaray jamkankar kaal paraataa hay. ||9||
Bound and gagged throughout the four ages, there is no liberation; the Messenger of Death keeps such a person under his gaze. ||9||

In plain words

A life with nothing real inside it can feel dry and empty, like bare ground.

Without the Name, where does lasting honour come from?

Tangled up in only the passing things, a person stays stuck for a long time — but the Name loosens every knot and gives a life its true, shining worth.

The Name gives a life its true, shining worth.
The deeper layer

Koorh kalar tan — a false life is like barren, salty ground, a heap of ash. Bin naavai kaisee pat tayree — without the Naam, what honour can you have? The Naam gives a life its pat (honour) and loosens every knot.

A Question to Sit With

What gives your days a sense of real meaning and worth?
