Verse 13 of 16

Cling to the Root, Not the Branches

sachee karnee gur kee sirkaaraa.
True are the actions of those who are under the Guru's influence.
aavan jaan nahee jam Dhaaraa.
They do not come and go in reincarnation, and they are not subject to the laws of Death.
daal chhod tat mool paraataa man saachaa omaahaa hay. ||13||
Whoever abandons the branches, and clings to the true root, enjoys true ecstasy within his mind. ||13||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

True are the deeds of those who live under the Guru's guidance.

They stop restlessly circling, and the fear of death loses all its power over them.

Let go of the outer branches that sway in every wind, and hold on to the true root — and a deep, steady joy fills the heart.

Hold the true root, and the swaying branches lose their power over you.
The deeper layer

The image of abandoning the daal (branches) to grip the mool (root) is the pauri's jewel: reach past the swaying outer things to the source. Those who do are freed from the grip of death-fear and filled with omaahaa (steady joy).

A Question to Sit With

What is a root-thing in your life worth holding, no matter which way the wind blows?
