Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 95
Verse 5 of 16

The One Who Forgets Where Home Is

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਨਿਹਚਉ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
jo tis bhaavai so nihcha-o hovai.
Whatever is pleasing to Your Will, undoubtedly comes to pass.
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਣਾਏ ਰੋਵੈ ॥
manmukh aap ganaa-ay rovai.
The self-willed manmukh shows off, and comes to grief.
ਨਾਵਹੁ ਭੁਲਾ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਪਾਏ ਆਇ ਜਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥
naavhu bhulaa tha-ur na paa-ay aa-ay jaa-ay dukh paa-idaa. ||5||
Forgetting the Name, he finds no place of rest; coming and going in reincarnation, he suffers in pain. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whatever the One wills always comes to be.

When a person lives only to show off and say 'look how great I am', they end up feeling empty inside.

Forgetting the One, they cannot find a resting place, and wander restlessly, looking everywhere but home.

Chasing 'look at me' leaves the heart with no place to rest.
The deeper layer

The 'manmukh' is the self-willed person turned away from the Guru. A life that forgets the Name is restless and empty inside; the endless 'coming and going' is a wandering that has lost its way home.

A Question to Sit With

When has showing off left you feeling emptier instead of happier?
