Drinking Even the Hard Things as Sweet

nirmal kaa-i-aa oojal hansaa.
Pure is the body, and immaculate is the swan-soul;
tis vich naam niranjan ansaa.
within it is the immaculate essence of the Naam.
saglay dookh amrit kar peevai baahurh dookh na paa-idaa. ||6||
Such a being drinks in all his pains like Ambrosial Nectar; he never suffers sorrow again. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When your heart is clean, your inner self is bright and pure, like a white swan.

Inside it lives a spark of the One, the Name, spotless and shining.

A heart like that can take in even life's hard days as if they were sweet, and no sorrow can weigh it down for long.

A heart rooted in the One can turn even hard days into something it grows from.
The deeper layer

The 'hansa' is the swan-soul. 'Saglay dookh amrit kar peevai' means drinking even pain as nectar: not that hardship is pleasant, but that a heart rooted in the Name can meet it with steadiness and grow from it.

A Question to Sit With

When has your own steadiness helped you get through a hard day?
