Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 96
Verse 6 of 16

The One, Delighting in Itself

ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮ ਨਾ ਬ੍ਰਤ ਪੂਜਾ ॥
jap tap sanjam naa barat poojaa.
There was no chanting or meditation, no self-discipline, fasting or worship.
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਦੂਜਾ ॥
naa ko aakh vakhaanai doojaa.
No one spoke or talked in duality.
ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਆਪੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੬॥
aapay aap upaa-ay vigsai aapay keemat paa-idaa. ||6||
He created Himself, and rejoiced; He evaluates Himself. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

None of our ways of reaching out had begun yet, no prayers, no fasting, no ceremonies.

No one yet spoke as if there were two of anything, because there was only One.

The One brought its own self forth and delighted in it, knowing its own worth all alone.

Even alone, before all things, the One was full of joy.
The deeper layer

Chanting, fasting and worship had not yet begun; they come later, as good gifts. 'Aapay aap upaa-ay vigsai': the One creates itself and rejoices, complete and joyful even alone.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you find joy even when you are all by yourself?
