Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
There were no cleansing rules yet, and no strings of prayer-beads.
There were no cowherds and no flute-playing Krishna from the old songs, no cows grazing in green fields.
There were no magic spells, no pretending, and no flute lifting its tune into the air.
Before anything was made, none of our religious customs existed yet.
Naa such sanjam tulsee maalaa — there were no cleansing rules, no self-control practices, and no tulsee maalaa. A maalaa is a string of prayer beads, and tulsee is holy basil. Gopee kaan na ga-oo go-aalaa — there were no Gopis, no Krishna, and no cows or cowherds. These come from much-loved Hindu stories, and they are named here with respect.
Tant mant pakhand na ko-ee — there were no charms, no spells and no pretending. Naa ko vans vajaa-idaa — no one was playing the flute. Think of a stage before the show begins, with no set and no actors. Only the One was there. Everything else came later.
What songs or stories do you love that came from long ago?
