From the Deep Stillness

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
maaroo mehlaa 1.
Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਸੁੰਨ ਕਲਾ ਅਪਰੰਪਰਿ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
sunn kalaa aprampar Dhaaree.
In the Primal Void, the Infinite Lord assumed His Power.
ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰੀ ॥
aap niraalam apar apaaree.
He Himself is unattached, infinite and incomparable.
ਆਪੇ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਸੁੰਨੁ ਉਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥
aapay kudrat kar kar daykhai sunnahu sunn upaa-idaa. ||1||
He Himself exercised His Creative Power, and He gazes upon His creation; from the Primal Void, He formed the Void. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In the deep, silent stillness, the endless One quietly gathered its power.

The One is free and boundless, like nothing else at all.

Out of that stillness the One brought forth its wonderful power, and watched, for even the stillness itself came from the One.

Everything came from the One's deep stillness.
The deeper layer

'Sunn' is the Primal Void, but not emptiness in the sense of nothing; it is a deep, pregnant stillness out of which everything comes. The One 'assumes its power' in this stillness, then gazes on all it makes.

A Question to Sit With

What does deep stillness feel like to you?
