Verse 7 of 17

Rising and Settling in the Stillness

sunnahu khaanee sunnahu banee.
From this Primal Void, came the four sources of creation, and the power of speech.
sunnahu upjee sunn samaanee.
They were created from the Void, and they will merge into the Void.
ut-bhuj chalat kee-aa sir kartai bismaad sabad daykhaa-idaa. ||7||
The Supreme Creator created the play of Nature; through the Word of His Shabad, He stages His Wondrous Show. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Out of the stillness came all the ways life is born, and the gift of speech.

Everything rose from the stillness, and back into the stillness it settles again.

The Supreme Maker set the whole play of nature going, and through the Word shows us wonder after wonder.

Everything rises from stillness and settles back into it.
The deeper layer

'Sunnahu upjee sunn samaanee': all things rise from the Void and merge back into it. Creation is the One's 'chalat', a wondrous play unfolded through the Shabad.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that rises and settles, like breathing?
