Raag Malaar
Commentary

Raag Malaar, Du-Padas, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

Come with empty hands and an honest heart — shelter takes the weight in an instant.

The Arc

The rahau pleads, child to mother, to be led to the Beloved, while others already rest with the One in their hearts. The middle verse is quietly brave — it catches its own small pride and lets it go, coming empty-handed before endless kindness. And the close finds the shelter: pains lifted in an instant, the night of life passed in peace.

Key Vocabulary

  • maa-ee / meet — the mother or friend the soul asks for help.
  • haumai — ego; here the quiet claim to be "as good as" the truly loving.
  • saran — sanctuary; the one shelter sought.
  • rain / raat — the night of life, passed in rest once sheltered.

Themes and Cross-Connections

The pauri's honesty about its own pride models haumai as something to notice and gently release, an illness to heal rather than a crime. Being "led" to the Beloved keeps the whole movement relational — help asked for, and given.

For Raag Malaar

The ache of separation, but always reaching toward homecoming and the rest of those already sheltered.

Translation Notes

"I am worthless" and "I am dishonored" are rendered as honest empty-handedness and having nothing to boast about, keeping the humility and removing self-condemnation.
