Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O mother, please help me meet my Beloved.

All my friends sleep happy and full of peace, because the One they love has come to live in the home of their hearts.

Longing for what's good is worth asking for help to reach.
The deeper layer

Ask for help to meet the One you love; those who already hold the One in their hearts rest in peace.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Maa-ee mohi pareetam dayh milaa-ee: O mother, help me meet my Beloved. The soul speaks like a young bride asking a trusted elder for help.

Sagal sahaylee sukh bhar sootee: all my friends sleep full of peace, jih ghar laal basaa-ee, because the Beloved lives in their home. Seeing their rest wakes a longing, and the longing turns into asking. Malaar is the raag of the rainy season, and of longing for the Beloved.

A Question to Sit With

Who would you ask for help in reaching something your heart wants most?
