I claim to be on a par with those who are imbued with the Love of their Beloved. This is my stubborn egotism. ||1||

In plain words

I am full of faults, and the One is always kind. I have no goodness of my own, so what clever tricks could I try?

I act as if I am equal to those who are dyed in their Beloved's love. That is just my ego being stubborn.

Noticing your own bit of pride is already the beginning of setting it down.
The deeper layer

Coming before the One with nothing to show off is where honesty begins.

Mohi avgan parabh sadaa da-i-aalaa: I have faults, and the One is always kind. Mohi nirgun ki-aa chaturaa-ee: with no goodness of my own, what use is cleverness?

Then the soul catches itself. Kara-o baraabar jo pari-a sang raatee: I put myself level with those who are dyed in the Beloved's love. Ih ha-umai kee dheethaa-ee: this is the stubbornness of ego (haumai, the feeling of being a separate self). Noticing it is the first step toward letting it go.

A Question to Sit With

Can you catch a small moment when you wanted to look better than you are?
