Raag Malaar
Commentary

Raag Malaar, Du-Padas, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

So thirsty for a glimpse you would grow wings — and the mercy you ask for falls like rain.

The Arc

The rahau turns the mind homeward and gives longing wings — thirsty for a glimpse, the soul would fly to meet the One. The honest search finds the path, walked in good company, asking for the sweetness as a kindness. And the close comes parched to the shelter, praying the rain of mercy to pour down, the hand to reach out, the belonging to be sealed.

Key Vocabulary

  • pankh lagaa-ay — to take wings and fly; longing at its most soaring.
  • darshan — the glimpse thirsted for.
  • khojat khojat — searching and seeking; the finding rewards the search.
  • barsu kirpaa — shower me with mercy; the Malaar image as prayer.

Themes and Cross-Connections

Longing given wings — not sinking but flying — is Malaar's viraha at its most hopeful. Effort and grace meet: the seeker searches, and the sweetness (ras) is given as kindness.

For Raag Malaar

Thirst given wings, and mercy that falls like the longed-for rain.

Translation Notes

"I am on fire" is softened to parched and worn — the dry longing before the monsoon.
