Verse 5 of 5

The Only Season Worth Living

ਜੇਹੀ ਰੁਤਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਸੁਖੁ ਤੇਹਾ ਤੇਹੋ ਜੇਹੀ ਦੇਹੀ ॥
jayhee rut kaa-i-aa sukh tayhaa tayho jayhee dayhee.
As is the season, so is the comfort of the body, and so is the body itself.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰੁਤਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਸਾਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਰੁਤਿ ਕੇਹੀ ॥੪॥੧॥
naanak rut suhaavee saa-ee bin naavai rut kayhee. ||4||1||
O Nanak, that season is beautiful; without the Name, what season is it? ||4||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

As the season is, so is the body's comfort, and so is the body itself.

Nanak says: the beautiful season is the one with the Naam. Without the Naam, what kind of season is that?

The season inside your heart matters more than the one outside your window.
The deeper layer

Every season has its own feel, and the season with the Naam is the beautiful one.

The seasons are the picture Raag Malaar is known for. Malaar is the raag of the rainy season. Jayhee rut kaa-i-aa sukh means as the season is, so is the body's comfort. A hot day makes you tired. A cool, rainy day makes you feel fresh.

Then Guru Nanak turns the picture inward. Bin naavai rut kayhee means, "Without the Name, what season is it?" The weather inside the heart matters more than the sky. With the Name, any season is a beautiful one.

A Question to Sit With

What is the weather like inside you today, and what changes it?
