Like Foam Upon The Water

kahat naanak gur parsaadee boojhhu ko-ee aisaa karay veechaaraa.
Says Nanak, by Guru's Grace, understand. Hardly anyone considers this.
ji-o jal oopar fayn budbudaa taisaa ih sansaaraa.
Like foam bubbling up on the surface of the water, so is this world.
jis tay ho-aa tiseh samaanaa chook ga-i-aa paasaaraa. ||4||1||
It shall eventually merge back into that from which it came, and all its expanse shall be gone. ||4||1||

In plain words

Nanak says: by the Guru's grace, understand this — hardly anyone stops to think it through.

Like foam bubbling up on the water, so is this world.

It melts back into what it came from, and all its wide spread is gone.

The busy world is like foam on water — beautiful, and worth holding lightly.
The deeper layer

The world is like foam on water: it rises, shines, and melts back into what it came from.

Ji-o jal oopar fayn budbudaa means like foam and bubbles on water. Taisaa ih sansaaraa: so is this world. Think of the bubbles in a bath. They rise, shine for a moment, and slip back into the water.

Jis tay ho-aa tiseh samaanaa means it melts back into what it came from. Kahat naanak: Nanak says few people stop to think about this. Understanding it comes gur parsaadee, by the Guru's grace. Seeing it, the heart can hold the world lightly and hold the One close.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that felt huge once but turned out to pass like a bubble?
