The Quiet Fourth State

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭੇਟਿਐ ਮਨੁ ਮਰਿ ਰਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
satgur bhayti-ai man mar rahai har naam vasai man aa-ay.
Meeting with the True Guru, the mind is overpowered; the Lord's Name comes to abide in the mind.

tis kee keemat naa pavai kahnaa kichhoo na jaa-ay.
The value of such a person cannot be estimated; nothing at all can be said about him.

cha-uthai pad vaasaa ho-i-aa sachai rahai samaa-ay. ||3||
He comes to dwell in the fourth state; he remains merged in the True Lord. ||3||

In plain words

Meeting the True Guru, the restless mind goes still, and the One's Naam comes to live in the mind.

The worth of such a person cannot be measured; nothing at all can be said about it.

They come to live in the fourth state, a deep stillness beyond waking, dreaming and sleep, and stay merged in the True One.

There is a deep, quiet state within, beyond waking, dreaming, and sleep.
The deeper layer

Meeting the True Guru stills the mind, and the Naam comes to live there in a deep, quiet rest.

Satgur bhaytiai man mar rahai: meeting the True Guru, the restless mind goes still, and the Naam comes to live within. Such a person is beyond price (keemat naa pavai). Cha-uthaa pad, the fourth state, beyond waking, dreaming and deep sleep, is the quiet rest of a soul merged in Truth.

A Question to Sit With

Where or when do you feel the deepest quiet inside yourself?
