Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, turn toward the Guru and think deeply in your heart.

Let go of false clinging to family, the poison of ego, and greedy wanting; keep it in your heart that one day you will have to leave.

Holding lightly what you cannot keep lets you hold what lasts all the closer.
The deeper layer

Keep the Guru's Word in your heart, loosen what clings, and remember that one day you will leave.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Man ray gurmukh ridai veechaar: O mind, turn toward the Guru and reflect in your heart. Taj koorh kutamb: let go of the false hold of family, the clinging that makes people forget the One. The family itself is loved; the clinging is what loosens. With it go haumai, ego, and trisnaa, endless wanting. Chalan ridai samhaal: hold in your heart that you will one day leave, and the Naam, which lasts, comes closer.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you love that you also know you cannot keep forever?
