Sikhism·Raag Malaar·Shabad 19
Verse 2 of 6

Look Closely, Not Widely

ਪੰਡਿਤ ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
pandit is man kaa karahu beechaar.
O Pandit, O religious scholar, reflect on this in your mind.
ਅਵਰੁ ਕਿ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਪੜਹਿ ਉਠਾਵਹਿ ਭਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
avar ke bahutaa parheh uthaaveh bhaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Why do you read so many other things, and carry such a heavy load? ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O Pandit, O learned scholar, think closely about this mind.

Why do you read so many other things and carry such a heavy load?

Understanding one mind deeply is worth more than piling up learning that only weighs you down.
The deeper layer

Before learning everything else, look closely at your own mind.

This line is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Pandit is man kaa karahu beechaar: O scholar, think about this mind. A pandit is a learned scholar. The verse asks why he reads so much else and uthaaveh bhaar, carries such a heavy load.

Think of a backpack stuffed with every book in the library while the one lesson you need is already in your pocket. The warning is about piling up facts without ever looking inside, and it fits a learner in any faith.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you would rather understand deeply than know a little about?
