Verse 3 of 6

Held In A Larger Care

ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਾਈ ॥
maa-i-aa mamtaa kartai laa-ee.
The Creator has attached it to Maya and possessiveness.
ਏਹੁ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਈ ॥
ayhu hukam kar sarisat upaa-ee.
Enforcing His Order, He created the world.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਭਾਈ ॥
gur parsaadee boojhhu bhaa-ee.
By Guru's Grace, understand this, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਸਦਾ ਰਹਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੨॥
sadaa rahhu har kee sarnaa-ee. ||2||
Remain forever in the Sanctuary of the Lord. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Creator has tied the mind to Maya, the world's shiny show, and to the feeling of "mine."

In the flow of the One's will, the whole world was made.

By the Guru's grace, understand this, dear brothers and sisters.

Stay always in the shelter of the One.

When you see that you are held in a larger care, you can stop struggling and rest.
The deeper layer

The Creator made the world and its pulls, and the safest place is always with the One.

Maa-i-aa mamtaa kartai laa-ee: the Creator tied the mind to maya, the shiny world, and to mamtaa, the feeling of "mine." Ayhu hukam kar sarisat upaa-ee: by this Hukam, the One's will, the whole world was made.

So what do we do? Gur parsaadee boojhhu bhaa-ee: understand this by the Guru's grace, dear friends. Then sadaa rahhu har kee sarnaa-ee: stay always in the One's shelter. Think of a bird in a storm tucked safe under its mother's wing. Knowing we are held, we can stop struggling and rest.

A Question to Sit With
