Free While Fully Alive

ਮਲਾਰ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
malaar mehlaa 3.
Malaar, Third Mehl:
ਜੀਵਤ ਮੁਕਤ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਲਾਗੇ ॥
jeevat mukat gurmatee laagay.
Those who are attached to the Guru's Teachings, are Jivan-mukta, liberated while yet alive.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਦ ਜਾਗੇ ॥
har kee bhagat an-din sad jaagay.
They remain forever awake and aware night and day, in devotional worship of the Lord.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
satgur sayveh aap gavaa-ay.
They serve the True Guru, and eradicate their self-conceit.
ਹਉ ਤਿਨ ਜਨ ਕੇ ਸਦ ਲਾਗਉ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
ha-o tin jan kay sad laaga-o paa-ay. ||1||
I fall at the feet of such humble beings. ||1||

In plain words

Those who hold to the Guru's teaching are free while they are still alive.

Night and day, they stay awake and aware, in loving devotion to the One.

They serve the True Guru and let go of their pride.

I always bow at the feet of such humble people.

You can be free right now, while fully alive.
The deeper layer

You can be free right now, while fully alive.

Jeevat mukat gurmatee laagay — those who hold the Guru's teaching close are jeevat mukat, free while still living. This is a big idea in the Guru's words. Freedom is a way of being alive, here and now. Think of it as the way you run, more than a prize at the end of the race.

Har kee bhagat an-din sad jaagay — they stay awake and aware, day and night, in love for the One. Satgur sayveh aap gavaa-ay — they serve the True Guru and let aap, their pride, melt away. Ha-o tin jan kay sad laaga-o paa-ay — and Guru Amar Das bows at the feet of such people.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to be fully awake and paying attention to your life?
