In plain words

O my mind, why are you angry?

In this restless age, the Naam of the One is what brings profit. Keep the Guru's teaching in your heart, and enjoy it day and night.

Let go of anger and keep what nourishes you close to your heart.
The deeper layer

Anger costs you, and the Naam gives back, so let the Guru's teaching fill your heart day and night.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the whole shabad, the line to stop and think about. Mayray man kaahay ros kareejai: "O my mind, why be angry?" The verse asks gently, the way you might ask a friend why they are still upset about yesterday.

The answer is about what pays. Laahaa kaljug raam naam hai: in kaljug, this present restless age, the laahaa, the profit, is the Naam. Holding on to a grudge costs us. Holding the Naam gives back.

So, an-din hirdai raveejai: keep the teaching alive in your heart, day and night, in place of the grudge.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel angry, what helps you let it settle?
