Verse 1 of 6

Everyone Says It, Few Receive It

ਮਲਾਰ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
malaar mehlaa 3.
Malaar, Third Mehl:
ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ਕਹੈ ॥
rasnaa naam sabh ko-ee kahai.
Everyone speaks the Name of the Lord with the tongue.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਤਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਹੈ ॥
satgur sayvay taa naam lahai.
But only by serving the True Guru does the mortal receive the Name.
ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋੜੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਘਰਿ ਰਹੈ ॥
banDhan torhay mukat ghar rahai.
His bonds are shattered, and he stays in the house of liberation.
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਘਰਿ ਬਹੈ ॥੧॥
gur sabdee asthir ghar bahai. ||1||
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he sits in the eternal, unchanging house. ||1||

In plain words

Everyone says the Naam with their tongue.

But only by serving the True Guru does a person receive the Naam.

Then the chains break, and that person lives in the home of freedom.

Through the Guru's Word, they sit in the steady home that never changes.

Anyone can say the Naam; it takes root when the heart turns toward the Guru.
The deeper layer

Anyone can say the Naam. It is received by serving the True Guru, and then the chains fall away.

Rasnaa naam sabh ko-ee kahai means "everyone speaks the Naam with the tongue." Saying it is easy, like reading a recipe out loud. Satgur sayvay taa naam lahai: by serving the True Guru, a person receives it. That is like cooking the meal and tasting it.

Then comes banDhan torhay: the bonds break. The old chains of habit and worry fall away. The heart settles in the asthir ghar, the steady home inside that nothing can shake.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between saying something and meaning it?
