Sikhism·Raag Malaar·Shabad 22
Verse 6 of 6

Cooled And Made Pure

ਗੁਰੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਮਾਨੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
gur maanai maanai sabh ko-ay.
One who has faith in the Guru - everyone has faith in him.
ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਮਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
gur bachnee man seetal ho-ay.
Through the Guru's Word, the mind is cooled and soothed.
ਚਹੁ ਜੁਗਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
chahu jug sobhaa nirmal jan so-ay.
Throughout the four ages, that humble being is known to be pure.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋਇ ॥੫॥੪॥੧੩॥੯॥੧੩॥੨੨॥
naanak gurmukh virlaa ko-ay. ||5||4||13||9||13||22||
O Nanak, that Gurmukh is so rare. ||5||4||13||9||13||22||

In plain words

Whoever trusts the Guru, everyone trusts.

Through the Guru's words, the mind grows cool and calm, like hot ground after rain.

Through all four ages, that humble person is known as pure.

Nanak says: such a person, facing the Guru, is rare.

The teaching cools a heated mind the way rain settles on hot ground.
The deeper layer

Trusting the Guru makes a person calm and trusted, like hot ground after rain.

Gur maanai maanai sabh ko-ay: the one who trusts the Guru is trusted by everyone. Gur bachnee man seetal ho-ay: through the Guru's words, the mind grows seetal, cool and soothed.

This is the rainy-season picture of Raag Malaar. Think of a hot summer sidewalk when the first rain hits it. The heat lifts, the dust settles, and soon everything turns green again. A heated mind can cool down the same way.

Chahu jug sobhaa nirmal jan so-ay: such a person is honored as pure through all four ages, through all of time. And naanak gurmukh virlaa ko-ay: such a person is virlaa, rare.

A Question to Sit With

What cools you down when your thoughts feel hot and stirred up?
