Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
Night and day I meditate on the One, Har, Har, in my heart. Through the Guru's teaching, my pain is forgotten.
The chains of all my hopes and wants have snapped. The One, my Lord, has poured kindness on me.
When the heart is full of what it loves, old aches quietly lose their grip.
An-din har har Dhi-aa-i-o hirdai: day and night, I keep the One in my heart. Mat gurmat dookh visaaree: through the teaching, my pain is forgotten. The pain is not fought. It simply fades, the way a scraped knee is forgotten once you are laughing with friends.
Sabh aasaa mansaa banDhan tootay: the chains of all my aasaa and mansaa, my hopes and cravings, snap. Endless wanting works like a chain. It keeps pulling you toward the next thing.
Why do the chains break? Har har parabh kirpaa Dhaaree: the One pours out kirpaa, kindness and grace.
The shabad opens with the words "One Universal Creator, by the Grace of the True Guru," the line that begins so many shabads.
What is a worry that got smaller once you focused on something you love?
