The Seeker Wakes, The Arguer Quiets

ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਰਹਸਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
sayvaa surat rahas gun gaavaa gurmukh gi-aan beechaaraa.
Focusing my awareness on selfless service, I joyfully sing His Praises. As Gurmukh, I contemplate spiritual wisdom.
ਖੋਜੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਾਦੀ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਹਉ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਰਤਾਰਾ ॥
khojee upjai baadee binsai ha-o bal bal gur kartaaraa.
The seeker comes forth, and the debater dies down; I am a sacrifice, a sacrifice to the Guru, the Creator Lord.
ਹਮ ਨੀਚ ਹੋੁਤੇ ਹੀਣਮਤਿ ਝੂਠੇ ਤੂ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
ham neech hotay heenmat jhoothay too sabad savaaranhaaraa.
I am low and wretched, with shallow and false understanding; You embellish and exalt me through the Word of Your Shabad.

And wherever there is self-realization, You are there; O True Lord Savior, You save us and carry us across. ||3||

In plain words

With my mind on serving, I sing Your praises with joy. Turning to the Guru, I think deeply about wisdom.

The seeker in me rises, and the arguer fades away. Again and again I give myself to the Guru, the Creator.

I was lowly and small, with a shallow, false mind. You make me beautiful through the Word.

Wherever someone comes to know their own self, You are there to carry them across. True One, You carry us across.

When the arguing quiets, honest seeking can begin.
The deeper layer

Serving and singing wake the seeker in you and quiet the arguer.

Sayvaa, serving others, and glad singing open the heart. Khojee upjai baadee binsai: the khojee, the seeker, comes alive, and the baadee, the one who argues just to win, fades away.

Ham neech: I was low, with shallow and false understanding. It is an honest admission of empty hands. Too sabad savaaranhaaraa: You are the one who makes me beautiful through the Word. Aatam cheen: wherever someone comes to know their own self, the One is there, carrying them across. Think of an argument with a friend that stops when one of you asks, "Wait, what do you mean?" Suddenly you are both learning.

A Question to Sit With

When has helping someone made you feel more open and alive?
