Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Forgetting the One, they suffer sorrow upon sorrow, and they die.
Again and again they wander through many kinds of lives, and they find shelter nowhere.
A heart that forgets the One finds no place to rest.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.
Har bisrat tay dukh dukh martay — forgetting the One, people live and die in sorrow. Anik baar bharmeh baho jonee — again and again they wander through many kinds of lives. Tayk na kaahoo Dhartay — they find no shelter anywhere.
The picture is of a restless heart. It looks for rest everywhere except the Source. It is like a traveler going from one crowded waiting room to the next, never finding a seat. The teaching is simple: only the One is true shelter.
And the door is left open. That shelter is always there, waiting to be remembered.
Where do you go when you need to feel safe and at rest?
