Those who forget my Beloved Lord are dead and dying. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My Beloved, those who are thirsty for You are never apart from You.

Those who forget my dear Lord are dying while they live.

The longing for what's good is itself a kind of closeness to it.
The deeper layer

If you are thirsty for the One, you are already close.

Jin ka-o pi-aas tumaaree pareetam means those who are thirsty for You, Beloved. Tin ka-o antar naahee: there is no distance between them and You. The longing itself is a kind of nearness. Wanting the One means the One is already close.

It is like missing a friend so much you think of them all day. In a way, they are already with you. The verse also says that those who forget the Beloved are as good as dead. Life turns grey without the One, and remembering brings the color back.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever felt close to someone just by how much you missed them?
