Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Today I have sat down in the One's shop.

With the One's wealth, the Naam, I have become partners with the humble, and I will not have to walk the road of death.

Deal in what lasts, and you're already on the road home.
The deeper layer

Trade in the Naam with humble partners, and you walk the road home.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Aaj mai baisi-o har haat means, "Today I have sat down in the One's shop." A haat is a shop or market stall. The picture is a trader opening for business. This shop deals in one thing only, the Naam.

Naam raas means the Naam as your money to trade with. Saajhee kar jan si-o: I have gone into partnership with the humble. So the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — is like a business partnership. It is like running a lemonade stand with your best friends, where the goal is sharing. The verse also says I will not have to walk death's road. Put simply, I step off the anxious road and onto the road home.

A Question to Sit With

If your heart were a shop, what would you want it to be full of?
