The One Always With You

ਇਤ ਉਤ ਡੋਲਿ ਡੋਲਿ ਸ੍ਰਮੁ ਪਾਇਓ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਹੋਤ ਬਿਰਾਨੋ ॥
it ut dol dol saram paa-i-o tan Dhan hot biraano.
Roaming and wandering here and there, the mortal finds only trouble; his body and wealth become strangers to himself.
ਲੋਗ ਦੁਰਾਇ ਕਰਤ ਠਗਿਆਈ ਹੋਤੌ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਜਾਨੋ ॥੧॥
log duraa-ay karat thagi-aa-ee hotou sang na jaano. ||1||
Hiding from people, he practices deception; he does not know the One who is always with him. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Wobbling here and there, a person finds only tiredness, and even body and money turn into strangers.

Hiding from people, they play tricks, and they don't know the One who is always with them.

The One who loves you is always right here with you.
The deeper layer

Running here and there wears us out, and we forget the One who is always with us.

It ut dol dol saram paa-i-o: wobbling here and there, we only get tired. Even our body and our money, tan dhan, start to feel like strangers. Think of racing from one thing to the next all day and ending up worn out and empty.

The verse also says such a person hides from others and tricks them. Hotou sang na jaano: they don't know the One who is right there with them. The One sees everything, kindly and completely. The cure is remembering that the One is always beside us.

A Question to Sit With

Does it change anything to remember the One is always with you?
