Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In so many ways, clinging to Maya, the shiny world of passing things, leads us to ruin.
Among millions, it is rare to find a servant of the One who stays a full devotee for long.
Chasing shiny things wears the heart down, and a steady, giving heart is rare.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Baho bidh maa-i-aa moh hiraano: in so many ways, attachment to maya leads us away. Maya means the shiny world of things that don't last, and moh means clinging to them. Think of wanting the newest game, then the next one, then the next. The wanting never ends, and it tires us out.
Kot madhay ko-oo birlaa sayvak: among millions, a true servant who stays devoted for long is rare. It holds up something worth growing toward.
What's something shiny you wanted badly that didn't matter much once you had it?
