We Become What We Sit Beside

aisee tayray darsan kee sobh at apaar pari-a amogh taisay hee sang sant banay.
Such is the glory of Your Darshan, so utterly infinite and fruitful, O my Love; so do we become by associating with the Saints.
ਭਵ ਉਤਾਰ ਨਾਮ ਭਨੇ ॥
bhav utaar naam bhanay.
Vibrating, chanting Your Name, we cross over the terrifying world-ocean.
ਰਮ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਮਾਲ ॥
ram raam raam maal.
They dwell on the Lord, Raam, Raam, chanting on their malas;
ਮਨਿ ਫੇਰਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੰਗੀਆ ॥

their minds are turned towards the Lord in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.

O servant Nanak, their Beloved Lord seems so sweet to them. ||2||1||23||

In plain words

My Love, the glory of seeing You is endless and never wasted. Near the saints, we become like that too.

Saying Your Naam, we cross the wide, rough sea of the world.

They remember the One — Raam, Raam, Raam — like beads on a string.

Their minds turn toward the One in the Sangat.

Nanak says: the Beloved has become so sweet to them.

You slowly become like the people you choose to sit beside.
The deeper layer

Near the saints, you become like them, and the Beloved grows sweet.

Aisee tayray darsan kee sobh: such is the glory of seeing You. Taisay hee sang sant banay: by staying near the saints, we become like them. Bhav utaar naam bhanay: saying the Naam, we cross the world-ocean. Ram raam raam maal is remembering the One like beads on a maalaa, a string of prayer beads, one after another. Man fayrtay har sang sangee-aa: their minds turn toward the One in the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. Pari-o preetam thee-aa: the Beloved has become sweet.

A Question to Sit With

Who do you want to become more like, just by spending time with them?
