Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My mind wanders through a thick, dark forest.

It walks on with eagerness and longing, wishing to meet the One.

Missing someone you love is love pointed toward a reunion.
The deeper layer

Even when your mind is lost in a thick forest, longing for the One keeps it walking toward the meeting.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad. Man ghanai bhramai banai: the mind wanders in a dense wood. This is viraha, the ache of being apart from the One you love, a feeling Malaar sings often. Umak taras chaalai: it walks on with eagerness (umak) and yearning (taras). Parabh milbay kee chaah: the wish to meet the One. The ache keeps the feet moving toward home.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what do you look forward to being with again?
