Carried Across The Water

ਹਰਿ ਚਰਨ ਸਰਨ ਤਰਨ ਸਾਗਰ ਧੁਨਿ ਅਨਹਤਾ ਰਸ ਬੈਨ ॥੧॥
har charan saran taran saagar Dhun anhataa ras bain. ||1||
The Sanctuary of the Lord's Feet carries us across the world-ocean. His Sublime Word is the unstruck celestial melody. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The shelter of the One's feet carries us across the ocean of the world.

The One's sweet Word is the unstruck music, a melody that plays with no hand to play it.

Under all the noise, there is a quiet music that can carry you.
The deeper layer

Taking shelter with the One is like being carried across a wide ocean.

Har charan saran taran saagar — the shelter of the One's feet carries us over the world-ocean. That ocean is life, with all its big waves. You do not have to swim it alone. The picture stays hopeful: someone is carrying you across.

The second half is about sound. Dhun anhataa means the "unstruck" music. Most sounds happen when one thing hits another, like a stick on a drum. This music has no drumstick. It is a melody heard inside, always playing.

It is a little like the soft hum of a house that you only notice when everything goes quiet. A few songs earlier in this raag, a Partaal — a song whose rhythm keeps changing — spoke of this same inner music.

A Question to Sit With

What is a sound or song that makes you feel carried and safe?
