In plain words

The One, Lord of the Universe, roars like a thundercloud.

Singing the One's goodness brings peace and calm.

The same thing that fills the sky with thunder can fill your heart with peace.
The deeper layer

The One thunders across the sky like a monsoon cloud, and singing of the One brings peace.

This is the pause line, the rahaa-o, the center of the shabad, and its picture is a monsoon storm.

Ghan garjat gobind roop — the One's form is like a thundercloud rolling across the sky. That is the big image of Raag Malaar, the rain raag. The One announces itself across the whole sky, the way thunder fills every corner of a summer evening.

Then comes the second half. Gun gaavat sukh chain — singing about the One's goodness brings peace and calm. Joy is simply how the heart answers that thunder of kindness.

Think of the storm that finally breaks a long heat wave. The sound is huge. But what you feel is relief.

A Question to Sit With

What is something powerful that also makes you feel calm?
