Friend Of The Forgotten

ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਨਾਥ ਅਨਾਥ ਸਖੇ ਦੀਨ ਦਰਦ ਨਿਵਾਰ ॥੧॥
paraan naath anaath sakhay deen darad nivaar. ||1||
You are the Master of the breath of life, the Companion of the lost and forsaken, the Destroyer of the pains of the poor. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You are the Master of my breath of life. You are the friend of those who are lost and have no one.

You take away the pain of the poor.

The greatest love draws closest to whoever is most left out.
The deeper layer

The One stays closest to those who feel lost or left out.

Paraan naath: Master of the breath of life. The One holds the very breath inside us.

Anaath sakhay: the friend of the anaath, those with no one to care for them. The One is pictured as the friend of exactly the people others overlook. This tender picture carries a big teaching of the Gurus: no one is lower because of the family or group they are born into.

Think of the kid eating lunch alone. Most people walk past. The One sits right down next to them.

Deen darad nivaar: the One who takes away the pain of the poor and the humble.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone who could use a friend right now — and could you be one?
