In plain words

My Beloved's love is sweet to me; it is my companion and my support.

Without the One, I cannot live in this world even for a moment — that is how great my hunger and thirst are.

The thirst for the One is a compass pointing home.
The deeper layer

Love for the One is a friend that stays, and the thirst for it runs deep.

This is the pause line, the rahaa-o, the center of the shabad. Pir bhaavai paraym sakhaa-ee — the Beloved's love is sweet. It is my sakhaa-ee, my companion and my support.

Tis bin gharhee nahee jag jeevaa — without it, I cannot bear even one moment in this world. Aisee pi-aas tisaa-ee — that is how deep my hunger and thirst are. This ache is viraha, the missing that comes with being apart. It is not something wrong with us. It works like a compass: the very pull that points the heart home. In Raag Malaar it is the rainbird's thirst for rain.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you miss so much that missing it tells you how much you love it?
